Brief History: From Seashells to Metropolis

1909

66 families led by Akiva Weiss drew plots of land in a "seashell lottery" on dunes north of Jaffa. Thus "Ahuzat Bayit" was born - the future Tel Aviv ("Hill of Spring").

1930s

Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany brought the Bauhaus style. Architects adapted it to the climate: white walls, flat terrace roofs, shading balconies.

1948

In the former Dizengoff Museum on Rothschild Boulevard, Ben-Gurion declared Israel's independence on May 14.

1950

Merger with Jaffa (one of the world's oldest ports!). The official name became Tel Aviv-Yafo.
